1,500 cards compromised

This story comes out of Canada but shows how easily criminals are able to acquire information from ATM skimming devices. If you see anything different about the ATM you are using, do not use it and notify the bank. This ring was able to steal 1,500 peoples card information.

More places need to offer a system to allow a customer’s card to stay in their possession. Anywhere you hand over your card you are putting yourself at risk. And more often than not, the person skimming your card isn't even the one using it!

3 Arrested With Over 30 Duplicated Cards On Them

Not only did they have 30 duplicated credit cards, these thieves had additional information to help them use these cards: "According to reports, the paper had an account number, birthday, and Social Security number written on it that belonged to an elderly female"

Waitress looking at 15 years for skimming

A former Waterloo waitress has been sent to prison for allegedly using her customers' credit card information to make new cards. She is looking at 15 years for using a skimming devise to take the cards info and make new ones. Another restaurant that could use the Dine Fraud Free program.

Gone are the days of heavy wallets, just a couple of cards work fine for the new web-age. Using near-field communication (NFC) and radio frequency identification (RFID) further negates the need to swipe credit cards through an interrogative machine. One has to simply wave the card and the money will be withdrawn from the bank account and the purchases will be made with ease. However, this method could be susceptible to fraud and theft. To avoid this, researchers at Pittsburg Swanson School of Engineering have built an improved method for enhanced security through new credit card design that allows it to turn ‘on’ and ‘off.’

Waiter accused of skimming customers credit cards

"A waiter at a Metairie restaurant and his roommate were arrested Tuesday in connection with a scheme to skim customer credit card information. Authorities say the suspects encoded the pilfered numbers onto phony cards that they used to buy electronics which were then sold on the street or online."
